Billionaire David Murdock is promoting an executive from within his own company to oversee his operations in North Carolina, which includes the North Carolina Research Campus.

Mark Spitzer, the director of human resources for Castle & Cooke, is now the vice president for North Carolina Operations.

Murdock’s holdings beyond the biotech campus include Vastle & Cooke, which focuses on real estate development, and t David H. Murdock Research Institute. 

“I am strongly committed to the mission of the NC Research Campus and to all of our operations in North Carolina,” Murdock said in a statement. “I feel Mark is the right person to help us succeed in achieving the vision of the campus and leading our North Carolina operations.”

Spitzer has 35 years of experience in professional and management roles in academia, construction and human resources, Murdock noted in a statement. Spitzer is a University of Southern California graduated, and he earned an MBA at UCLA.

“This is a very exciting opportunity to work with Mr. Murdock to realize his vision for the NC Research Campus and the David H. Murdock Research Institute,” Spitzer said. “I look forward to working with leadership on the campus and to leading Castle & Cooke’s North Carolina management team to further our common mission.”

Lynne Scott Safrit, the previous head of Murdock’s North Carolina operations, left that job in April.
