Recruiters seek Wake & Durham Tech students for Biotech jobs

Many students graduating from schools like Wake Tech and Durham Tech are in high demand for jobs in the Biotech and Bio-pharmaceutical industries.

Almost 200 of those students came to the "Biotech Career Fair" to meet with 10 company representatives in Morrisville at the Lilly Science and Technology Center.

There are jobs aplenty for students graduating from Wake Tech and Durham Tech as well as a few university graduates who arrived at the event.

"Our students are really looking forward to those high tech, good paying jobs," said Leslie Eisenhower, dean of biotechnologies at Wake Technical Community College.

The average starting salary for these jobs is about $45,000 a year with benefits. Pay is even higher for those with a degree and experience. "Our students are getting a wonderful opportunity to meet with these industries that are hiring now," said Eisenhower.

Even older graduates like William Fulton from Durham Tech, are ready to jump back into the workforce. He said, "There’s opportunity. My wife is also in the pharmaceutical industry and I said, that’s something I might be interested in doing."

In Morrisville, recruiters were ready to bring new workers into jobs as bioprocessing technicians, manufacturing associates, quality control specialists and more.

Durham Tech graduate Joseph Thompson is ready to take the step. "It’s like you can go from shipping and receiving to working in a store to do quality assurance. The opportunities are available. It’s up to the individual," said Thompson.

NC State University grad Brianna Murphy also came to the Biotech Fair and was excited about her options. "Because there’s so many different opportunities for people to like explore and with all the medical developments, it’s a great area to be to make a difference."

Wake Tech’s Leslie Eisenhower says they hope to host more career events with Durham Tech including bridge programs to prepare middle and high school students for careers.
