CARY – Once a potential successor to SAS cofounder and CEO Jim Goodnight, Oliver Schabenberger has returned to academia.

“After 21 years in the Triangle area of North Carolina it was time to go home — home to my academic roots at Virginia Tech. I was on the statistics faculty at VT in 2002 when I left academia for the corporate world. After two decades of learning and growing in companies large and small I am delighted to go back, give back, teach and learn some more,” he wrote in a post at LinkedIn.

“To the many folks I got to meet in the Triangle: So long, and thanks for all the fish. Come find me when you are in Blacksburg. Thank you to Dean Kevin Pitts , Tom Woteki , and all of Virginia Tech for welcoming me as Professor of Practice to the Virginia Tech Academy of Data Science.”

Schabenberger, COO and CTO of the Cary-based analytics firm, was in line to succeed Goodnight when he left the company in December, 2020.

He later worked as chief innovation officer at SingleStore.
