Raleigh MineVention, all future MineVention events canceled, organizers say
The organizers of MineVention, a convention dedicated to the popular video game Minecraft, announced Monday their convention will be canceled.
The convention was scheduled to take place Saturday, May 6, through Sunday, May 7, at the Raleigh Convention Center.
In addition, organizers said all future MineVentions will no longer take place. Organizes informed sponsors of the cancellation Monday morning.
"The Minecraft community area an amazing group of passionate individuals who showcase and represent the game in a most positive way," said organizers in a statement. "Unfortunately, the model of our event will no longer be accepted by the event guidelines at Mojang within their updated guidelines."
The statement, which was shared on all MineVention social platforms, said Mojang Studios, who helped develop the beloved game, wants the community to continue to celebrate the game, but their updated guidelines said any live, in-person event should not have the following:
- More than 150 participants
- Sponsorships for purpose of profit
- Rent a venue and charge admission
- Vendors selling Minecraft-themed products
MineVention has been holding the convention in various cities and countries since 2014. Organizers said they are confused by the change in guidelines.
"While we respect the guidelines issued by Mojang's enforcement team, we struggle to understand a way forward for any company whom wish to run community event," organizers said.
Organizers said anyone who purchased a ticket to the convention Saturday and Sunday will receive a full refund.
