RALEIGH – The first significant mass layoffs in North Carolina are taking place – two sites in Winston-Salem and another in Rutherford County – according to notices filed with the North Carolina Department of Commerce.

Collins Aerospace says it is shuttering two offices in Forsyth County, affecting 163 and 32 positions. The closures are permanent, according to the filings.

In Bostic, which is located in Rutherford County, Milliken says it is shutting down an operation employing 103 people. That closure also is permanent, the company said. Milliken is a textile company.

The only other layoff disclosed in a so-called WARN notice was the cutting of four jobs based in North Carolina by Brinks, which is headquartered in Dallas, Texas.

Mass layoffs in North Carolina last year numbered just over 4,000 – the lowest in more than two decades.
