First-ever text message sent out 30 years ago
30 years ago, Neil Papworth did something groundbreaking. He sent the first-ever text message to a friend from work.

The year was 1992, and Michael Papworth did something groundbreaking.
Believe it or not, Saturday marks 30 years since the first text message ever was sent. Papworth was the person who sent the first-ever text.
He said his first message was a simple "Merry Christmas" to a colleague back in 1992.
Papworth said he now sends dozens every day and had no idea how much texting would replace so much of our face-to-face communication, especially with kids.
"It is hard for us older people," Papworth said. "To think like. . . the guy lives three doors down, don't you want to go say hello?"
