RALEIGH – There are signs that the Federal Reserve’s moves to tamp down inflation by increasing interest rates are starting to work, as job openings are decreasing at Triangle companies that until recently have been hiring – aggressively.

That’s according to Dr. Anne York, an economist and program director at Meredith College, who told WRAL TechWire that there is still “great uncertainty” about the future decisions that could be made by the Federal Reserve, with the next meeting of the Federal Reserve Open Market Committee coming on Dec. 13-14.

“Companies are rightly responding by trying to only maintain and not growing their labor headcount,” said York.  “But we are fortunate in NC that we have a very diversified and vibrant economy, with people who have a lot of entrepreneurial initiative.”

And the latest data from the WRAL TechWire Jobs Report shows that while the 40 employers tracked by the report have reduced job openings by 6.3% compared to a month ago, there are still more than 3,700 job openings at these firms.

One reason: the regional and state economy is resilient, said York.  “That will help our state weather any coming recession better than some other states without these assets.”

An example: In the government sector, demand for new workers or to retain current ones has bonuses and other perks on the table.
