WASHINGTON, N.C. — Xelevate, a Virginia-based drone research facility and flight school, is expanding to North Carolina.

Washington-Warren Airport in Beaufort County will serve as a new home for Xelevate, which promotes safe and secure drone engagement, innovation and cultural acceptance, working with government agencies, public safety and local communities, according to its website.

Washington-Warren Airport will be designated a drone-smart airport and training school.

The Xelevate announcement comes after the airport recently received $20 million in state funding to modernize the airport.

Xelevate will feature two runways exceeding 5,000 feet, 600 acres of uncontrolled airspace and proximity to government installations, according to a press release calling it the "first of its kind on the East Coast."
