ROCKY MOUNT – The City of Rocky Mount and Metronet will partner to bring high-speed broadband internet service to the region.
The company will provide 100 percent fiber optic internet service to homes and businesses, and will fully fund the construction project to establish the network in the city, according to a statement.
“Residents and businesses will soon be able to experience a future-proof network in a time when reliable access has become critical,” said John Cinelli, Metronet CEO in a statement. “Rocky Mount will soon have access to the benefits of a future-proof fiber optic network capable of providing multi-gigabit speeds with XGS PON technology, including 5GB.”
Construction is anticipated to last two years, and service could begin for some customers in the area as soon as 2023.
With the installation, Rocky Mount would become a “Gigabit City,” with symmetrical upload and download speeds of up to 1,000 mbps.
Metronet is investing in other regions of the state, as well. Construction projects are currently underway in Fayetteville, Hickory, Greenville, New Bern, and Jacksonville.
