RALEIGH – North Carolina’s unemployment rate dropped to 3.7% in December, according to the latest data from the North Carolina Department of Commerce.
The state’s seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate of 3.7% in December decreased from a rate of 3.9% in November, and the national unemployment rate decreased from 4.2% in November to 3.9% in December. In December 2020, North Carolina’s unemployment rate was 2.4% higher, at 6.1%, and the national unemployment rate was 6.7% in December 2020.
According to the Department of Commerce, the number of people employed in North Carolina increased 25,884 between November 2021 and December 2021, and totaled 4,869,342 workers. That’s an increase of 138,178 during the year.
There are currently 188,391 unemployed people in North Carolina, according to the Department of Commerce’s report.

According to a new Indeed report, two metropolitan areas in North Carolina rank in the top 10 metro regions in the country for the growth in the number of job postings since February 2021. Durham-Chapel Hill ranked third, and Greensboro ranked eighth. And the WRAL TechWire weekly jobs report finds that Triangle-area companies continue to seek talent for in-person, hybrid, and remote roles.
