RALEIGH – More than 100 workers – both salaried and hourly – at a Smithfield Packaged Meats plant will lose their jobs just before Christmas.
Smithfield Packaged Meats on Hovis Road in Charlotte is being closed, according to a mass layoff list the company filed with the state of North Carolina.
The closing date is set for Dec. 8.
“All” workers salaried and hourly will lose their jobs, the company said.
The total workforce is 107, according to the notice.
“Providing transition support to our Charlotte employees is our number-one priority,” Doug Sutton, chief manufacturing officer for Smithfield Foods, said in a press release as reported by Pork Business. “We appreciate their commitment to producing good food responsibly, and we hope many of them will continue in roles at other Smithfield locations.”
The company has more than 10,000 workers in North Carolina, the news site noted.
So far this year, 89 layoff notices have been filed with the state, affecting more than 7,700 workers.
In 2022, some 4,200 workers were affected by layoffs spread across 42 notices.
