“On the last day of work at the Pactiv Evergreen paper mill, downtown Canton was quiet. No rail cars rumbled on the Blue Ridge Southern track, no smoke puffed from the factory’s iconic stacks, no whistles blew. For the first time in 115 years, the sweet-sour stench of wood cooking into pulp was gone,” writes Lisa Rab, a western North Carolina resident.
