RALEIGH – A paper mill will be shut down in Canton and jobs will be cut at another plant, totaling 1,050 layoffs, according to a mass layoff filed with the state of North Carolina.

Pactiv Evergreen, which operates the plants, said layoffs will begin in June. The plant closing was announced earlier this month.

Some 900 workers will be laid off in Canton. The plant is to be closed by March 9, 2025.

Another 150 workers will lose jobs at a plant in Waynesville.

The layoffs are the largest announced by a company in North Carolina since QVC cut 1,950 jobs after a plant fire in Rocky Mount in December 2021.
