Microsoft is investigating a networking issue after tens of thousands of users around the world have reported being unable to access services like Teams and Outlook. Most are now “stable,” the tech giant says.

“We’ve confirmed that the impacted services have recovered and remain stable. We’re investigating some potential impact to the Exchange Online Service,” Microsoft tweeted after hours of disurption.

As of 2 p.m. incidents were still occurring but had dropped to just over 30 from a peak of well over 200 at 3:30 a.m. Wednesday, according to Downdetector. The number of reports has declined over the night but began climbing again after 7 a.m.

Earlier, Microsoft said all services were available, reported the New York Times, but Downdetector continues to show problems.

It tweeted earlier that it had “isolated the problem to a networking configuration issue” and that a network change suspected to be causing the problem was rolled back., The Associated Press reported.

In a series of tweets posted on the Microsoft 365 Status Twitter account, Microsoft said it was taking steps to isolate the problem, but did not mention how widespread it was.

“We’re investigating issues impacting multiple Microsoft 365 services,” said Microsoft, to which it later added: “We’ve rolled back a network change that we believe is causing impact. We’re monitoring the service as the rollback takes effect.”

Noted Downdetector:  “It is common for some problems to be reported throughout the day. Downdetector only reports an incident when the number of problem reports is significantly higher than the typical volume for that time of day.”
