Elon Musk has completed the $44 billion acquisition of Twitter and that could have implications for some of the company’s current employees.  According to multiple media reports, including a story first published by the New York Times on Saturday, Musk took steps to announce layoffs as soon as Saturday.

As the deal came together, fell apart, and came together again, many have speculated that layoffs could be coming for the technology company that is believed to employ about 7,500 employees as of the time the deal was closed last week.

That includes Musk himself, who told investors that he planned to take the company private, make job cuts, and find new revenue streams.

According to the New York Times, which noted three separate anonymous sources who confirmed details to the publication, the layoffs at Twitter would occur prior to November 1, which is a date on which some employees would receive stock grants as a part of compensation agreements.

Twitter layoffs coming?

But in a Tweet on Sunday, Musk denied this detail, noting simply “This is false.”

A prior report from the Washington Post indicated that Musk may consider job cuts as high as 75% of the company’s workforce.

Musk did lay off three senior executives upon closing the sale of the company.  Former CEO Parag Agrawal, former CFO Ned Segal and former Chief Legal Officer Vijaya Gadde were ousted, WRAL TechWire reported last week.

Prior to the deal closing, Musk carried an actual kitchen sink into Twitter headquarters in San Francisco.  At that visit, Musk spoke with employees, reportedly telling those gathered that he does not in fact plan to cut 75% of Twitter’s staff, despite other prior media reports.

Now that the deal is closed, the cloud of uncertainty that has hung over Twitter’s business, employees and shareholders for much of the year may now be clearing.  The closing of the deal also averts a court battle that was set to take place if the acquisition did not close by 5 p.m. ET Friday.
