RALEIGH – Raleigh-based startup Base Healthcare says there’s a big blind spot in medicine: low testosterone levels.  According to the company, 90% of men who are afflicted with low testosterone or hypogonadism are unaware of the condition, because they haven’t received testing.

That’s why the company built a new digital platform, which it released this week.

“We are excited to be launching this platform in a post-pandemic world when it’s imperative to be looking at foundational and preventive health measures, and adequate testosterone is just that,” said Amit Patel, medical director at Base Healthcare, in a statement.  “We are able to combine hormone expertise with a leading digital platform to offer men not just convenience, but expert guidance on their journey to better living.”

According to the company, the digital product it has built is a subscription-based virtual health platform that offers one way for men to access what the statement refers to as Adequate Testosterone Therapy or ATT.

Raleigh biotech startup receives FDA approval for testosterone therapy

How it works

Anyone can register as a member on the company’s platform, a spokesperson told WRAL TechWire.  And for a one-time fee of $149, new members can register and complete lab work, then review results with a clinician.

Should the results indicate that the individual would be a viable candidate for testosterone therapy, they may opt-in to a monthly subscription service at a rate of $159 per month.

According to a spokesperson, an FDA-approved oral testosterone will be offered through the program, for members who subscribe to the platform.

Base Healthcare is a subsidiary of Marius Pharmaceuticals.  Earlier this year, an oral testosterone replacement therapy developed by Marius was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The company notes that more than 20 million men in the United States have low testosterone levels and that the company believes “every man over the age of 40 should have their testosterone levels routinely or annually checked.”
