RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK – Tech giant Microsoft is cutting hundreds of jobs, Bloomberg news reported Tuesday. Microsoft later confirmed the cuts to CNBC.

“Today we notified a small number of employees that their roles have been eliminated,” a Microsoft spokesperson confirmed to CNBC via email. “This was a result of a strategic realignment, and, like all companies, we evaluate our business on a regular basis. We continue to invest in certain areas and grow headcount in the year ahead.”

Microsoft has a growing presence in the Research Triangle and in North Carolina.

As of this weekend, the company’s website posted 92 openings in the Triangle.  But that’s lower than the number of openings available as of June 27, 2022, locally in the Triangle, when there were 203 openings according to the WRAL TechWire Jobs Report.

The layoffs will affect less than 1% of the company’s 181,000 workforce, CNBC noted.

The layoffs come as the US economy struggles to deal with inflation, supply chain issues and the threat of a possible recession.
