RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK – The boom in jobs and demand for talent appears to be rapidly coming to a close across the Triangle, according to data from the region’s biggest jobs boards.

While more than 50,000 jobs remain unfilled, data gathered by WRAL TechWire over the weekend finds drops on every major board over the last month—although Durham County and Johnston County showed slight upticks at one site (Adzuna). Raleigh jobs took the biggest hit with a drop of nearly 3,600 since last month, according to Adzuna.

The 30-day-trend has not wiped out a huge gain in job openings year-over-year. Still, growing pessimism about the overall economy could be spreading here. Last week, JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon forecast an economic “hurricane” coming, and a new survey of business executives reveals concerns about inflation and labor costs.

Per a recent survey from the Association of International Certified Professional Accountants, senior leaders at U.S. companies are less optimistic about the next 12 months than at any point over the last 11 years. Also, fewer than one in five executives expressed any optimism, citing the impact of inflation on their companies and the U.S. economy.

Execs’ optimism about US economy plummets to 11-year low, survey finds

Atop the list of reported concerns was the impact of inflation on the U.S. economy and executives’ companies. According to the survey, that includes labor and operation costs, which are anticipated to increase at a rate of 4.4%.

As of today, however, the demand for local talent is spread across a range of employers, from small companies and startups to nonprofits and governments to multinational corporations.

National jobs market remains strong

Across the country, however, federal and state data continues to show a robust market for talent.

Even amid ongoing recession concerns, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics announced last Friday that the national job market added 390,000 positions in May, while the unemployment rate remained unchanged (at 3.6%) for the third consecutive month. Another interesting tidbit: In April, the number of job openings declined to 11.4 million from a record high of 11.9 million in March, and the number of fired or laid-off workers slid to its lowest level on record.

Meanwhile, the North Carolina Department of Commerce recently released its latest set of employment estimates, reporting that employers added 23,922 workers in April, while the number of unemployed persons decreased by 6,924. (Note that these estimates don’t account for broader seasonal patterns.) Unemployment has consistently fallen in most counties across the Triangle region.
