RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK – The nation’s gross domestic product fell into negative territory for the first three months of 2022, the stock market had another bad week, and talk is growing about a possible recession. But one might never know that based on the ongoing hiring boom across the Research Triangle region.

Of the major jobs boards tracked by WRAL TechWire for its weekly exclusive Jobs Report, all report more openings now than when the year began. Here’s a breakdown:

  • Adzuna is up by 13,000 to more than 55,000 in Wake County
  • Dice has increased by 9,000 to some 54,000
  • Glassdoor is up 4,000 to 39,000
  • Indeed openings have swelled to more than 34,000 – up 4,000
  • And LinkedIn posts some 50,000 – up by 7,000

And that demand for talent may not subside any time soon. Technology jobs are booming in the state – from software developers and cybersecurity analysts to the IT workers who keep our computers running.

Brooks Raiford, president and CEO of the NC Technology Association, says economic worries aren’t a drag on hiring plans.

In a new survey, the overwhelming majority of companies, 94.3%, said their organizations still planned to hire additional staff in the coming months. But there are some concerns about the current state of the labor market, with 57% of respondents citing talent supply and more than half reporting concerns about workers choosing to retire as a part of the so-called “Great Resignation.”

Who says Triangle is one of nation’s top jobs markets? LinkedIn, that’s who

As Raiford noted, talent already is proving hard to find with a record of nearly 50,000 open tech sector jobs across the state. according to NC TECH’s most recent IT jobs report.

Parul Patel is one of those back in school and seeking a tech career after years as a stay-at-home mom.

“This is something I’ve wanted to do for awhile, and this is the right time for me now,” she said.

She’s one final exam away from graduating with a degree in cybersecurity from Wake Tech.

“The more I started taking classes, the more my passion grew and I just love it,” she said.

Raiford says the technology we’ve come to rely on during the pandemic is driving the surge in job openings.

“Those will continue to power, I think, many organizations, so the demand for talent will continue to be there,” he said.

The Triangle’s built-in talent pool from colleges and universities is attractive to tech companies.

But there’s still a shortage, so that sometimes presents a challenge in filling roles. It also presents upward pressure on wages – which is great for employees, but maybe not so great for employers.

Lauren Bamford, who connects employers with Wake Tech students looking for work, says the most in-demand jobs are in civil engineering, nursing and all types of tech.

“The market is looking great. If you are looking to get hired in tech, you certainly have a good shot,” she said.

That is promising for Patel as she gets ready to rejoin the workforce.

“The opportunities are out there, so I’m sure the right opportunity will come when it’s time,” she said.

In additional to tech savvy, employers are looking for “soft skills” and a willingness to learn, Bamford said.

“One of the most important qualities to have right now is to show you’re trainable. They don’t expect you to have all the answers right away. They really want to see that you enjoy learning, that you like to learn, that you’re really interested in this technical field.”

WRAL TechWire’s latest weekly count of local positions on national job boards reveals a modest decline from previous weeks’ totals. But employers are still posting thousands of new jobs every week—even more than they remove, as previously posted positions are filled or no longer listed for whatever reason.

For example: Indeed.com shows 2,159 fewer total jobs in Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill and Johnston County than it did seven days ago. However, employers still posted 6,198 new openings in those areas over the last seven days.

NC’s tech leaders remain bullish, 94% planning to hire despite inflation, recession talk

Similarly, LinkedIn shows 868 fewer positions in Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill compared to last Sunday’s totals, even though over 13,000 new jobs were added in the last seven days. (See the full breakdown below.)

Today’s Jobs Report has a strong emphasis on tech talent, consistent with demand across North Carolina. Tech-specific positions abound at many of the Triangle’s leading employers, from banks to healthcare and insurance providers to biotech firms and startups.

WRAL TechWire’s weekly Jobs Report compiles the latest information from the region’s top job boards, offering a breakdown of how many jobs are posted, which companies are hiring, and what positions are most in-demand. We’ve also included upcoming job fairs, student-centric resources, and a list of Twitter accounts that track local job openings.

Below, we’ll review what’s new since last week’s Jobs Report.
