RALEIGH – Given the current war for talent with some 50,000 open tech jobs already across North Carolina are there people available who can fill the exploding number of jobs for building the metaverse?

According to data just released from the job search site Adzuna, Metaverse vacancies have quadrupled in four months. The site tracked 3,339 US job postings with the keyword  “metaverse” in February 2022 alone.

James Neave, Head of Data Science at Adzuna, said in the report that the recruitment of metaverse experts shows “exponential growth”.

“Metaverse experts are the new hot ticket with related roles ranging from developers to data scientists, writers, and creatives,” wrote Neave. “This follows booming interest in crypto and cybersecurity roles throughout 2021 and we continue to see the tech sector growing and strengthening during this time.”

Building the metaverse: What is it, and are companies up to the challenge?

Ginna Lambert, Director of Content for Virginia-based Conscio VR, agrees.

“It’s a war out there for those unicorns,” Lambert said, commenting on the war for developer talent. “Unity and Unreal programmers are in a great place right now to get hired!”

Notably, Epic Games is hiring for metaverse development. The privately-held company has openings for a Director of Product Marketing in Metaverse Development, a Senior Visual Language Programmer, and more.

According to Neave, Microsoft and Google are both also investing in augmented reality (AR) and metaverse. And both of those companies are staffing up for a wide variety of roles in the Triangle.

There are opportunities outside of software development as well, with openings for UI and UX designers, animation developers, writers, and data scientists.

According to the Adzuna report, the top five industries currently hiring for metaverse experts are:

  • IT (1,705 jobs)
  • Creative & Design (566 jobs)
  • PR, Advertising & Marketing (361 jobs)
  • Engineering (272 jobs)
  • Sales (202 jobs)
