RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK – Companies in the Triangle and across the U.S. continue to hunt for talent to fill thousands of jobs locally and millions nationally, with stepped-up hiring plans making the employment market even stronger for job seekers.

The national job market continues to bounce back from pandemic lows, with the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ latest jobs report indicating sustained growth across key sectors of the economy. U.S. employers added a better-than-expected total of 678,000 jobs in February, and the unemployment rate fell to a new pandemic-era low of 3.8%.

Separately, a new report from the Association of International Certified Professional Accountants (AICPA) provides a glimpse into how business executives are thinking about their hiring plans this quarter. Last week, the organization released its Q1 2022 business and industry economic outlook survey, drawing responses from 461 executives.

The survey found that 33% of all companies report having an appropriate number of employees, a 6% drop from the fourth quarter of 2021. Of the 57% of respondents reporting too few employees, 12% said they’re hesitant to ramp up hiring due to current conditions, while 45% plan to bring on more employees in the near future.

Additionally, the number of executives reporting an excess of employees increased from a low of 2% last quarter to 5% this quarter.

It’s important to note that the survey was completed before Russia invaded Ukraine in late-February, so financial uncertainties are bound to increase in AICPA’s next quarterly report. Still, the availability of skilled personnel remains the second-largest challenge facing organizations today, behind inflation.

Where Does the Triangle Stand?

As with the national workforce, the Triangle’s job market is steadily recovering from the lows brought by the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the pace of hiring has been somewhat erratic in recent weeks.

Every Sunday, WRAL TechWire tracks the total number of local positions posted on national job boards, then we compare it to the previous week’s count. Our latest results are somewhat mixed, keeping with the trend of recent weeks. Thousands of jobs were added across Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill on Adzuna and Indeed.com, while other sites such as LinkedIn and ZipRecruiter show drops over the last seven days. (See the full breakdown in the section below.)

A consistent theme in today’s local job market is the spread of tech demand outside of the tech sector: As NC TECH President and CEO Brooks Raiford told TechWire last week, the growth of tech workers in non-tech jobs is expanding even faster than at tech companies. The demand is especially high at finance and insurance firms, a sector that is well-represented in the following Jobs Report. From Truist to Bank of America to Blue Cross NC, major employers are continually growing their tech workforce in the Triangle area.

WRAL TechWire’s weekly Jobs Report compiles the latest information from the region’s top job boards, offering a breakdown of how many jobs are posted, which companies are hiring, and what positions are most in-demand. We’ve also included upcoming job fairs, student-centric resources, and a list of Twitter accounts that track local job openings.

Here’s what’s new since last week’s Jobs Report.
