RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK – The pace of hiring appears to be slowing down in the Triangle, as several major job boards show declines in the number of local positions available.

Every week, WRAL TechWire tracks the total number of Triangle-area openings listed on top job boards. The past seven days showed some notable drops compared to last week’s count. Dice.com shows about 4,000 fewer jobs in Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill than it did last Monday. On LinkedIn, the number of Raleigh job openings dropped by -2,037, with some more modest declines in Durham (-35) and Chapel Hill (-185). Indeed.com and Glassdoor also registered decreases over the last week.

But ZipRecruiter and Adzuna provided some counterbalance to the declines on other sites. Adzuna shows +2,476 more jobs in Wake County and +1,389 more jobs in Raleigh since last Monday. ZipRecruiter added 5,850 in Raleigh and 217 in Durham over the last week.

These trends are generally in line with what TechWire has seen in the last month. Still, there are tens of thousands of jobs available across the Triangle area—especially in the fields of life science, biotech, software development, financial services and health care.

More jobs data this week should provide some clarity about what’s happening.

According to the Associated Press, the Labor Department is expected to report on Friday that nonfarm employers added 362,000 jobs in December. That would be up from 210,000 in November, which was the weakest monthly gain in nearly a year. Even so, the unemployment rate tumbled in November to 4.2%, its lowest level since the pandemic struck.

Per FactSet, the monthly change in nonfarm payrolls, seasonally adjusted, are as follows:

  • July: 1,091,000
  • Aug.: 483,000
  • Sept.: 379,000
  • Oct.: 546,000
  • Nov.: 210,000
  • Dec. (est.): 362,000

WRAL TechWire’s weekly Jobs Report compiles the latest information from the region’s top job boards, offering a breakdown of how many jobs are posted, which companies are hiring, and what positions are most in-demand. We’ve also included upcoming job fairs, student-centric resources, and a list of Twitter accounts that track local job openings.

Here’s what’s new since last week’s Jobs Report.
