CHARLOTTE – Cardinal Innovations Healthcare Solutions will lay off about 175 employees and permanently closing a facility on Mallard Creek Road in Charlotte, according to a notice filed with the North Carolina Department of Commerce by the company.

The layoffs will begin to impact employees on Christmas Eve, the company noted in the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification or WARN notice filed with the Department of Commerce.  About 40 employees will be “separated at staggered times between January 1, 2022 and March 31, 2022,” the notice reads.

The layoffs are due to “due to the consolidation of Cardinal Innovations and Vaya Health, where Vaya Health will be the surviving entity and Cardinal Innovations will be dissolved.

The companies announced the consolidation on June 1.

In a statement on June 1, the companies noted that the consolidation “will enable a stronger health plan to serve individuals who receive care through North Carolina’s public health care system” and that it would “bring needed stability to members in counties served by Cardinal Innovations.”

About 350 Cardinal Innovations employees will be transferred into the Vaya Health operations on December 27, 2021, the company noted, adding that a total of more than half of the company’s remaining employees have already “committed to joining other Local Management
Entity/Managed Care Organizations across North Carolina by the end of 2021.”

About 40 additional employees would remain, and will be involuntarily separated by the end of March 2022, the company stated in the notice.
