An NC IDEA grant recipient, Chapel Hill startup MVTrak says its sensor, assessment and head protection can have a major impact on addressing perhaps the most controversial issue in sports as well the military today: Concussions and traumatic brain injuries.

“Our technology and products are the only proven and readily usable methodologies for accurate sensing (96% accuracy) and verifiable solutions for TBI [traumatic brain injury],” says CEO Noel Heiks.

“The MVTrak sensor suite has been proven worldwide with the most advanced military units and top athletic groups in the world.”

MVTrak says its Tachta in-ear head motion sensor “revolutionizes head trauma risk management.”

Highlights, the company says, include:

  • Continuous monitoring of head impact.
  • Magnitude, direction, frequency, and history of hits-all documented and tracked.
  • Finally deliver solutions for prevention and assessment with immediate correlated data in the field.

The technology has been developed and patented with two-time Olympic gold medalist Cindy Parlow Cone helping lead the development.

MVTrak will be presenting its technology at the CED Tech Venture Conference on Sept. 19-20.

This is the 30th in a series of profiles written, edited and published by WRAL TechWire in partnership with the CED.

The Q&A:

  • What is the focus of your business?

Solutions for Concussions and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)

  • What is the top pain point/business application you are seeking to address?

Concussions and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) are a critical problem in sports and in the military, affecting nearly 500,000 athletes and over 20,000 soldiers annually. MVTrak is dedicated to dramatically improving outcomes through advanced technology in sensing, assessment, and head protection.

  • What makes it unique?

Our technology and products are the only proven and readily usable methodologies for accurate sensing (96% accuracy) and verifiable solutions for TBI. The MVTrak sensor suite has been proven worldwide with the most advanced military units and top athletic groups in the world.

In addition, our team is unrivaled: featuring 20+ year experts in injury biomechanics and TBI treatment, a two-time Olympic gold medalist in soccer, and a 20+ year expert in commercializing products for the military.

  • Why should investors be interested in your firm?

MVTrak is competitively positioned to meet an immediate need in athletics and in the military.

Both markets recognize that TBI is a critical issue (for example, recent NCAA class action lawsuit for football players, and Veterans Affairs establishes TBI as a major focus area). Addressable market size for solutions in each vertical is in the multi-billion dollar range. The field is ripe for investment and MVTrak has the products and team to deliver excellent returns.

  • How are you financed at this point?

We are privately financed and have received an NC IDEA grant and funding from SOAR.
