A bundle of high-tech jobs are coming to the Triangle – and more could come here in the future if a Silicon Valley venture capital-backed technology firm keeps growing.

The “help wanted” sign remains up at the office of Apptio in Cary, and 40 or so jobs are expected to be added this year, a spokesperson told WRAL Tech Wire.

The Seattle, Wash.-based provide of on-demand technology business management solutions to help clients “manage the cost, quality and value of IT Services,” closed on $50 million in new venture funding this week. And some of the funds will be used to expand its office in Cary, which Apptio opened last year.

“Apptio recently opened an additional office in Raleigh to take advantage of the area’s rich pool of talented technology professionals,” a spokesperson for the company says.

“With this new capital, plans to grow the business into the next large enterprise software industry, including additional growth for the North Carolina office.”

Here is a Q&A with company representative Daniel Jensen about the office, why the company chose to locate in the Triangle, its growth plans and mission.

  • When did Apptio open the Triangle office, where is it specifically, and how many employees?

We officially opened the Raleigh-Durham office in May 2011, however we’ve had a handful of Apptio employees here for a few years now. The office is located about 5 miles from the Raleigh International Airport, in the suburb of Cary.

There are currently 50 employees working in this office.

  • Why chose to expand to NC?

North Carolina is a great location for a company like ours. It’s centrally located on the Eastern seaboard where many of our customers are located, making travel more inexpensive and convenient for our consultants. There is also a bevy of technical talent in the Raleigh-Durham area, especially in the Business Intelligence category given the presence of SAS. Given that analytics is a major focus of our product, it made a lot of sense to take advantage of this talent pool.

  • What is the mission/focus of the NC operation?

Our NC office is the East coast headquarters for Apptio’s Center of Excellence, where our trained and certified staff work with the growing customer base to provide TBM solutions. The mission of the Center of Excellence is to create a discipline around TBM so that IT can be run ‘like a business across enterprise organizations.

  • How many employees will be added in the expansion, and in what areas?

Our current plan is to expand to 90 employees in the Raleigh Durham office by the end of 2012.

  • Will the company be looking for more space? If so, how much?

The plan for growth does incorporate pursuing additional space, in the range of 20,000 to 25,000 square feet, although that is not expected to take place until 2013.


T. Rowe Price Joins Investor List

Apptio currently lists three openings in Raleigh and some 50 across the company.

T. Rowe Price led the investment. Also investing were existing backers Andreessen Horowitz, Greylock Partners, Madrona Venture Group and Shasta Ventures.

In announcing its Raleigh office last fall, Apptio said it was seeking the Triangle area’s “most motivated, driven and experienced IT and finance professionals.”

The company was looking to hire “consultants, senior consultants, education specialists and engagement managers, all of which play an integral part in managing Apptio’s long term customer relationships” as well as user interface and “seller side: Java engineers “who enjoy making an impact by designing world class user interfaces, developing nextgen analytics solutions, and designing/constructing multi-threaded, grid-based systems to process complex datasets so our technology solutions deliver value to customers.”

Customers include Bank of America, Boeing, Cisco, Clorox, Facebook, JPMorgan Chase, Microsoft, Northrop Grumman, St. Luke’s Health System, and Swiss Re.
