Digital health company Novarus Healthcare has a new name and a new top exceutive.

Healthcare industry veteran Tom Hearn has been named managing principal of the company, which was previously called Novaris Mobile Technologies. Charlotte-based Novarus said the name change better reflects its mobile health and health IT emphasis.

Novarus was founded in 2002 to develop mobile software for a variety of industries. The company develops applications for Android, Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) and Research in Motion (Nasdaq: RIMM) handheld devices.

As Novarus Healthcare, the company will focus on developing mobile health apps for hospitals, health systems, physician practices and others in the healthcare field. The company says it has developed more than 65 apps to date. The market for these apps is growing. ABI Research in November released a report “Mobile Devices and mHealth” projecting that the sports and mobile health market will top $400 million in 2016, up from $120 million in 2010.

Hearn brings 25 years of healthcare industry experience to Novarus. He was most recently senior vice president of ambulatory services for Winston-Salem, North Carolina-based hospital system Novant Health. He also spent 12 years as an executive for Charlotte, North Carolina hospital operator MedCath (Nasdaq: MDTH).
