Health IT Services Group is opening a development office at the American Tobacco complex in Durham and plans to hire 45 people.

The company offers a software produce called Acumen nEHR that enables patients and doctors to access medial records in real time. Some 5,000 people spread across 32 states use the service daily, according to the firm.

Data is exchanged over the Internet and meets federal security requirements for privacy.

Health IT Services Group is part of Tennessee-based Fresenius Medical Care.

Fresenius focuses on renal services, such as dialysis.

“We looked throughout the country for a market with a rich depth of tech professionals, high quality of life and world class office space,” said Dana Hensley, president of HITSG, in a statement. “The amenities, the look, the feel, the central location all helped us select the American Tobacco campus. We knew this would be a great place to house developers and attract new talent.”

The firm is leasing 12,000 square feet of space formerly occupied by GlaxoSmithKline.

The company’s goal is to have the office operational before Nov. 1.
