A leaked version of “Gears of War 3” that hit the Internet over the weekend is not the final version, Epic Games says.

In a statement, the Cary-based developer of the award-winning series also said it is working with law enforcement to track down the thieves who leaked the game.

“This content is not the final build and is not representative of what fans will enjoy when the game launches worldwide on Sept. 20, 2011,” Epic said in a statement as posted by The Examiner.com and other websites.

Other games have been leaked in advance of release in the past.

Gears is the lead franchise for rapidly growing Epic, having sold millions of copies through the first two versions. Gears 3 has already sold more than a million copies in advance. (Read details here.)
