A review of several recent surveys points out that women are more comfortable using online communities designed for women than social network sites such as Facebook, according to eMarketer.

For example, iVillage and Burke Research found that female users prefer sites such as iVillage, CafeMom and Baby Center over social media and web portals, due to a higher trust level and a belief that these sites offer more expertise to understand and meet needs.

Women do use social media sites for socializing but not as often for shopping, new products and purchase decisions, another iVillage survey done with BlogHer found.

eMarketer also cited a survey from Yahoo! last year that reported similar findings.
