Groupon, a shopping website that offers a daily deal on the best local goods, services and cultural events in more than 300 markets around the world, launched in Roanoke on December 20, 2010.

“A cultural hub known for its events and attractions, Roanoke is a great match for the Groupon model,” said Rob Solomon, the company’s president and chief operating officer.

Using the principles of collective buying, Groupon negotiates discounts with popular businesses. Subscribers get free daily e-mails alerting them to the deals, which go active once a set number of people agree to buy.

The system encourages merchants to participate by offering them a minimum number of new customers.

The company says it has saved more than $900 million for subscribers across North America.
