RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. – Biogen Idec is hosting and sponsoring an event on Thursday to introduce middle school girls to careers in biotechnology.
The event will take place on Dec. 2 from 3:45 to 6:45 p.m. for grades 7 and 8 in Research Triangle Park.
Organized by Women in Bio, the event includes a tour of the facility and opportunities to learn about female life science professionals’ careers and experiences.
According to statistics from the National Science Foundation, women make up two-thirds of psychologists, less than half of biological and life scientists, a quarter of mathematical and computer scientists, and just one-tenth of engineers.
The event hopes to encourage girls’ curiosity in biotechnology while nurturing a business and entrepreneurial spirit.
Women In Bio, a national organization aimed at helping women scientists and entrepreneurs thrive in biotechnology businesses, expanded to the RTP area last year. The organization said Research Triangle Park is an ideal region for expansion with its major biotech and pharmaceutical companies, a rich venture capital community, and top research institutions and universities.
North Carolina ranks biotechnology as one of the top three industries in the state and the area has been ranked one of the top areas in biotechnology development in the U.S.
This week’s event is free and open to the public.
