Urban Planet Mobile, a Durham-based startup that offers English instruction and other products geared to mobile phones, will soon be helping residents across Indonesia learn how to speak English.

PT Telkomsel, the largest mobile phone service provider across Indonesia with in excess of 90 million subscribers, will offer Urban English Language Learning Program from Urban Planet Mobile.

Financial terms were not disclosed.

The new venture says users will be taught English through text messages. Included is a ring tone for English learning.

Urban Planet also recently launched a vocabulary program using texting that targets teens in the U.S. prepping for the SAT.

“In Indonesia geography demands that cell phones are the primary tool of communication and the sheer quantity of people that use them make them the perfect educational tool,” said Brian OliverSmith, founder and chief executive officer of Urban Planet Mobile. “Each day the student receives a quick language lesson set to music which simultaneously utilizes three types of learning: reading, audio and kinetic learning, a combination proven to boost memory.”
