The competition for Android operating system “apps” could be about to intensify.

Silicon Valley tech website TechCrunch is reporting that Amazon (Nasdaq: AMZN) plans to launch an application store for Android apps in direct competition with Google (Nasdaq: GOOG).

Google created the Android operating system.

“Amazon’s entry into the Android app space follows Verizon’s move into the area as well with the forthcoming V Cast apps,” TechCrunch says.
