KANNAPOLIS, N.C. – The net worth of billionaire David Murdock has plunged $1 billion, according to data in the released on Thursday.

Murdock, 87, is the founder of the $1.5 billion that is being built in Kannapolis. He also is the owner of Dole Food.

According to Forbes, Murdock’s net worth is $2.7 billion, down from $3.7 billion a year ago. His fortune has declined substantially since peaking at $4.7 billion in 2007, Forbes’ data shows.

Just last week, however, Murdock told the Salisbury Post that his personal finances had improved. Murdock also reiterated his commitment to more growth at the NCRC.

“My desire extends very much further than what we have here,” Murdock told the Post’s Emily Ford.

The Forbes list contains – SAS co-founders Jim Goodnight and John Sall and Charlotte’s C.D. Spangler.
