Local Tech Wire

DURHAM, N.C. – Dr. Julian Lombardi, a professor at Duke University and an entrepreneur who built a virtual world (VIOS) long before Second Life was created, led a spirited briefing and discussion about the “Immersive Internet” at Local Tech Wire’s latest “Executive Exchange” event Wednesday.

The Immersive net that will combine virtual worlds in a 3-D environment delivered through the next generation of the web will provide new levels of connection and plenty of business opportunities, Dr. Lombardi told the crowd.

Beth Lavin and Sabrina Wood of WRAL.com covered the event live for LTW, delivering more than 60 “tweets” in about 90 minutes. LTW added nine “followers” to its growing Twitter following in the course of the event.

What follows are their tweets. Note especially the “takeaways” as defined by Dr. Lombardi, who also was hit with a question about immortality.

The Twitter "tweets" report:

1. • Virtual worlds are currently not linked. There are no standards in place currently because they are all proprietary and fragmented #techwire about 2 hours ago via CoTweet

2. • Dr. Lombardi’s answer: Not now, only in video games where you get shot and can get back up again. #techwire about 2 hours ago via CoTweet

3. • Question from the audience: Does the word "immortality" ever come up when talking about these worlds? #techwire about 2 hours ago via CoTweet

4. • Virtual environments offer a way to augment, not necessarily replace, our real world interactions #techwire about 2 hours ago via CoTweet

16. • How do we enable this new medium? By allowing it to happen, and then monetizing the delivery of services to that new medium. #techwire about 2 hours ago via CoTweet

17. • Only 30 people can be supported by a virtual server today; to make the Immernet possible, we have to solve the scalability issue #techwire about 2 hours ago via CoTweet

18. • There are only 30,000 people on Second Life, but it has a lot of hype. Why? Server can only handle so much…#techwire about 2 hours ago via CoTweet

19. • Virtual worlds require that information continually be requested from the server… which makes it difficult to scale #techwire about 2 hours ago via CoTweet

20. • Immernet needs to be noncommercial, scalable & efficient, easily provisioned & accessed content, and needs to run on all platforms #techwire about 2 hours ago via CoTweet

21. • The Immernet cannot be owned by one company; it will have to be noncommercial like WWW #techwire about 2 hours ago via CoTweet

22. • Pop Quiz! What date is April 22, 1993? (900 wks ago) Answer: when the WWW was born! It has changed the world in not that long…#techwire about 2 hours ago via CoTweet

23. • Selling virtual world platforms is not the right approach #techwire about 2 hours ago via CoTweet

24. • Everyone will play a role, nobody controls it all. Emerging ecosystem of information. #techwire about 2 hours ago via CoTweet

25. • Immediate, intuitive, interactive, immersive describe the new medium, the "Immernet" #techwire about 2 hours ago via CoTweet

26. • What does 3D add of value? It is the medium which can hold the serendipitous ad hoc associations we make (like networking events) #techwire about 2 hours ago via CoTweet

27. • Virtual worlds are the "special sauce" when added to Web 2.0 technologies. 3D holds people and info, fuels our business & economy #techwire about 2 hours ago via CoTweet

28. • Value needs to be added to virtual worlds in order to monetize it #techwire about 2 hours ago via CoTweet

29. • What’s next? Web 3.0, the Immernet. Connecting WITH. The challenge is that everyone will be participating. #techwire about 2 hours ago via CoTweet

34. • Experiences that you have in virtual worlds can be very formative, that’s why its so important for education & training #techwire about 3 hours ago via CoTweet

35. • What if the medium of global communication was not the webpage? What if the webpage was put into the context of a virtual space? #techwire about 3 hours ago via CoTweet

36. • You don’t have to give up your web. It can be projected into these virtual spaces. Virtual reality is just a new medium #techwire about 3 hours ago via CoTweet
