RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. – IBM (NYSE: IBM) employs more people in the Triangle at some 10,000 workers than anywhere else in the U.S., but its largest software lab is now located in Massachusetts.

Big Blue formally opened what it calls the on Wednesday with locations in Littleton and Westford.

Some 3,400 people work at the site, which represents a consolidation of some IBM operations in the New England area.
"IBM views Massachusetts as an innovation hotbed," said Steve Mills, senior vice president and group executive of IBM Software, in a statement. "IBM is committed to nurturing the human talent and economic strengths of the growing Massachusetts tech hub. The IBM Mass Lab is a critical component of our growth strategy for the state of Massachusetts."

IBM has some 70 software labs around the world.

Big Blue said it has acquired 14 Massachusetts-based firms as it has expanded its software capabilities. Among those companies were: Rational Software, Cognos, Ascential Software Corporation, and most recently Ounce Labs and Guardium Corporation.

IBM also touted its relationship with startups in Massachusetts, saying it has partnered with more than 100 venture capital-backed firms.

The Mass Lab sites were chosen due in part to locations near the “high-tech belt” along I-495, IBM said.

Other IBM connections with Massachusetts include the IBM Research operation in Cambridge and the IBM Innovation Center in Waltham.
