RALEIGH, N.C. – A mix of science and technology jobs, patent production, venture capital and creative jobs lifted Raleigh to the No. 3 spot on Forbes magazine’s new list.

San Jose, Calif. and Austin, Texas took the top two spots.

The magazine, which recently listed Raleigh as its “Most Wired City,” ranked Raleigh:

• Fourth in high tech and science jobs

• 10th in creative jobs

• Fourth in patents per capita

• Fifth in venture capital investment per capita

“Raleigh, N.C., which took the third-place spot on our list, has a similar mix of academia and industry,” the magazine said, referring to Austin and San Jose.

“Raleigh placed first on our ranking this year of the country’s Most Wired Cities and has drawn in tech powerhouses like Cisco, Lenovo and IBM with its neighboring Research Triangle Park, a science and business focused area between the city and neighboring Durham and Chapel Hill. Those companies are fed with fresh talent from schools in the surrounding area, including Duke, North Carolina State University and the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.”

San Jose ranked first in all four categories.

Austin ranked fifth in science and tech jobs, seventh in creative jobs, second in patents per capita and eighth in VC investment.
