Although few details were disclosed, the food giant and the campus that is being built by billionaire David Murdock issued a joint announcement. Clyde Higgs, vice president for business development at the NCRC, also disclosed the news at a Charlotte Regional Partnership luncheon.

Improving human health through better foods is a primary driving force in the establishment of the NCRC by Murdock.

“It will help them with their product line at the end of the day,” Higgs said of General Mills, according to the Salisbury Post. More details about the General Mills operation will be announced in June, Higgs added.

Other private sector firms working with the NCRC include Monsanto, LabCorp. And Dole Food, which is owned by Murdoch. Several of the state’s major universities, including N.C. State, UNC-Chapel Hill, Duke, Appalachian State, N.C. A&T also either have a presence at NCRC or are working with the campus.

“We see this partnership as a unique opportunity to collaboratively uncover solutions that could improve the nutrition of food, including whole grains and vegetables,” said Lane Johnson, director of agricultural research for General Mills, in a statement.

“We are excited to pair our more than 70 years of agricultural research experience with the cutting edge technology and expertise offered by the North Carolina Research Campus,” he added.

According to the company, improving health and nutrition of its products have been instituted across half its product line.

“Partners like General Mills have been our focus since the NC Research Campus was first envisioned and we are extremely excited to add another outstanding corporate partner to our list of industry collaborators,” Higgs added in the joint statement.

General Mills, which is based in Minneapolis, Minn., generated $15.9 billion in sales last year.
