Georgia Tech picks Research Institute director as first exec for research

ATLANTA – Stephen Cross, director of the , will become the university’s executive vice president for research on May 1.

The research position is a new one.

Cross has been director of the Research Institute since 2003. Earlier in his career he was director and chief executive officer of the Software Engineering Institute at Carnegie Mellon University. He also worked at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency at the Defense Department.

In his new role, Cross will oversee Tech’s research centers. He has described the new position as "chief marketing officer … spending a lot of time outside the Institute building relationships with senior officials in government and industry."

An interim director for the Research Institute will be named by May 1.
