MORRISVILLE, N.C. – , the world’s No. 4 PC manufacturer, is reportedly considering buying a 30 percent ownership stake in Elitegroup Computer Systems.
Elitegroup is based in Taiwan.
Chinese media is reporting the possible deal, citing unnamed sources.
Lenovo, which has its global headquarters in Morrisville but bases most of its operations and does most of its business in China, has declined comment.
The reports follow renewed speculation that Lenovo could buy Brazil-based Positivo in a bid to expand its market share in one of the world’s fastest growing PC markets.
Lenovo also recently reacquired its mobile phone business subsidiary in China.
According to SinoCast Daily, Lenovo is offering approximately $60 million for about a third of Elitegroup shares.
“An acquisition of ECS will enable Lenovo to beef up its R&D and expand production in the long run, according to another source,” SinoCast said. “ECS is engaged in the R&D and production of laptops and computer components such as video cards.”
