RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. – is commemorating its 25th anniversary as a tenant in RTP in a big way, expanding into new research space, hiring additional employees and acquiring more land.
Much more, in fact.
“We have signed an agreement to purchase 50 additional acres of land within RTP for potential future expansion,” Syngenta spokesperson Jane Bachmann told Local Tech Wire and WRAL.com.
However, she added: “At this point, we have not made any decisions on use.”
Syngenta currently has 200,000 square feet of lab, office and greenhouse space. Syngenta said that the move to leased space will allow expansions of lab space at the main site
The company, which is focused on crop genetic technology, also is adding to its Triangle work force of some 400 people.
“We have continued to hire throughout 2009 and have open positions,” Bachmann said.

Syngenta opened its RTP facility in 1984.

The parent of Syngenta employs more than 24,000 people worldwide.
Syngenta Biotechnology recently hired Campagne away from rival Bayer CropScience to lead its own R&D efforts in RTP and at another facility in Beijing. Bayer CropScience also is based in the Triangle.
Syngenta recently acquired -held Synergene Seed & Technology Inc. and Pybas Vegetable Seed Co. in California.
