RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. — Activision Blizzard’s (Nasdaq: ATVI) took no prisoners when "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2" deployed into the gaming marketplace, selling a record 4.7 million copies in the first 24 hours in North America and the United Kingdom, the publisher said.

"The ‘Call of Duty’ franchise has become a cultural phenomenon showing the power of video games as an entertainment medium," said Mike Griffith, Activision Publishing, Inc., CEO.

Before last week’s frontal assault buy the new shooter game, the record for initial sales belonged to "Grand Theft Auto IV," which reported 3.6 million units world-wide on its first day of sales last year.

Activision said the first-day sales of its game were worth $310 million.
