WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Officials in the Triad, the N.C. Department of Commerce and Dell are putting together a task force to help find a new tenant for the massive PC assembly plant that Dell is shutting down in Winston-Salem.
According to the Winston-Salem Journal, Winston-Salem Mayor Allen Joines in order to "find a user who would be generating as many good, quality jobs as we can find.”
The Dell plant covers more than 700,000 square feet.
Dell is laying off more than 900 workers and preparing to offshore the PC assembly jobs to Mexico and other locations.
Joines is also spearheading efforts to get Dell to repay million of dollars it received in local tax incentives in building the plant in North Carolina.
Task force members include Lydia Kennedy of Dell and Susan Fleetwood of the N.C. Department of Commerce.
In an exchange of letters released by Joines, Dell has agreed to repay to:
• City of Winston-Salem: $15,556,071
• County of Forsyth: $7,916,328
• The Millennium (economic development) Fund: $2,774,228
• Forsyth County Development Corporation: $308,622
Kip Thompson, Dell’s vice president for global facilities and strategic growth, sent the letter of agreement to Joines. Joines had sent Dell a letter on Oct. 19 spelling out the amounts Dell would have to repay since it was closing the plant and had not fulfilled economic development agreements required for the incentives.
