RALEIGH, N.C. – Shares in moved slightly higher Tuesday after the Raleigh-based firm disclosed that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration had approved its new product known as Metozolv ODT.

Salix focuses on gastrointestinal drugs.

The drug, which disintegrates quickly on the tongue, is a treatment for a diabetic condition (gastroparesis) in which the stomach has trouble emptying. It also can be used for treatment of an acid reflux condition known as gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD.

Metozolv ODT is intended to help patients who have trouble swallowing, do not have water available when treatment is required, or need a portable medication, according to Salix.

The drug is expected to be available in November. It will have patent protection through at least 2017.
