According to a court filing on Friday, Nortel wants the deadline for claims that can be filed against the telecommunications gear maker extended until Feb. 1, 2010.

Nortel first filed for bankruptcy protection in January.

In the filing, Nortel’s attorneys said the extension “will afford the Debtors and all other parties in interest an opportunity to develop fully the grounds upon which serious negotiations toward a plan of reorganization can be based.”

Nortel employs some 1,800 people at its campus in the Triangle.

The company has already sold some of its principle assets, including its enterprise unit that employs most of the RTP employees, That group is headed for auction later this month. Avaya has already been awarded the right to exceed other bids as the so-called "stalking horse."

However, a combination of Avaya and the Nortel group is being protested to the U.S. Department of Justice as anti-competitive.
