RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. – Tweets will not carry a trademark for , at least for the immediate future.

Cnet reports that the U.S. Patent Office from Twitter, citing that three other firms had applied for “tweet” coverage before Twitter did so in March.

The earlier applicants: TweetMarks, Cotweet and Tweetphoto.

Twitter didn’t tweet back a response when Cnet asked for comment.

Twitter, meanwhile, is preparing to offer its first true business offering, according to VentureBeat.

Co-founder Biz Stone said (APIs) will be out later this year.

“Twitter will still be free for everybody and we’ll still tell them to go crazy with it,” Stone said. “But we’ve identified a selection of things that businesses say are helping to make them more profit.”
