RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. – The latest rounds of layoffs at IBM (NYSE: IBM) cost the jobs of 493 workers in two business units, according to a New York newspaper.
Based on IBM “resource action” documents regarding the layoffs that were , the Times Herald-Record in Middletown, N.Y., said 184 jobs were cut in the Global Business Services group and another 309 were eliminated in the Services Delivery Unit earlier this month.
"I can confirm that several weeks ago we notified a very small number of IBM employees about staff reductions in North America," IBM spokesman Doug Shelton told the newspaper. "We will not comment on the number, location or business units affected."
IBM seldom discloses much information about layoffs. However, various media reports have said IBM has laid off around 8,000 North America-based workers, the newspaper said.
IBM employs some 9,000 people in the counties surrounding Middletown.
It employs more than 10,000 around the Triangle.
