As many as 12 undergraduate science and engineering majors could receive grants worth $5,000 from the as part of a program designed to help give them experience in the workplace.

The Undergraduate Research Fellowship is open to public and private four-year institutions in North Carolina other than Duke, N.C. State and UNC-Chapel Hill.

Students will work in an academic or industrial research environment and also have a mentor.

The institutions are expected to apply for the grants and then pick the winning students. is March 11.

The research involved should focus on biotechnology, technology, and applications generally involving biology at the cellular and molecular level.
