, an Internet security firm based in the United Kingdom, is opening a U.S. subsidiary with an office in Charlotte.

Richard Moore, a vice president with the firm, will run the U.S. operation.

SmoothWall is launching its U.S. effort with two employees and plans to add five more this year, according to a spokesperson for the company.

The company said it considered Atlanta and several other cities before settling on Charlotte.

Founded in 2000, SmoothWall focuses on Web filtering. Customers include numerous U.S. schools and Universities plus the NFL’s Detroit Lions and the American Federal Savings Bank.

“Our Guardian filter challenges some of the biggest names in IT on both price and features,” Moore said. “Essentially we give schools and businesses the sophisticated security they need, but at a much more sensible price.”
