HCL America, an international information technology consulting firm, will create more than 500 jobs as part of an expansion to Wake County, the company said Monday.

The company already has 33 employees working with clients in North Carolina.

A facility will be opened near Research Triangle Park with an investment of $3.2 million, according to the N.C. Department of Commerce. The new operation will employ up to 513 people over the next five years. The state’s Economic Investment Committee approved the grant Monday morning.

“North Carolina was a natural choice for HCL, given the state’s skilled workforce, strong educational network and its proximity to our U.S. customer base,” said Shami Khorana, president of HCL America, in a statement. “As we continue to focus on driving innovation for our clients around the world, we saw the need to tap into the deep talent pool in the U.S. to help sustain our growth here. We look forward to welcoming many local citizens to the HCL team.”

Services provide by the HCL Triangle operation will include software application development and maintenance, help desk support and consulting services.

The average wage will be $46,650.

“These jobs are a good fit for our economy and critical to the 513 families who will benefit from them,” Gov. Mike Easley said in a statement. “We are working with education and workforce training programs to make sure we can deliver employees with IT skills to companies located anywhere in our state.”

HCL, which maintains its U.S. headquarters in Sunnyvale, Calif., will receive a Job Development Investment Grant up to $5 million over 10 years from the state of North Carolina if job creation requirements are met.

The grant, known as a JDIG, was approved by the N.C. Department of Commerce on Monday morning.
